It’s been stated that 70% of South African pro footballers end up in financial distress post-retirement.
It's clear that SA footballers and possibly other elite sports people have a troublesome relationship with money despite some being substantial earners.
In this episode Bruce speaks to former pro footballer Jonathan Armogam about the poor financial education prevalent amongst pro sports people and the major changes required in heart, soul and mind, or debt and poverty will remain the narrative.
Jonathan shares some nuggets on his experiences in his life with poor financial choices and what he is still observing amongst others still in their pro careers, and shares a nugget he learnt from his own dad - Seek ye first the kingdom, and all else will be added.

It's easy for elite athletes to fall into the trap of attaching their self-worth to their performance and continually seeking affirmation from people.
Former pro footballer Jonathan Armogam experienced this entrapment in his career and chose the path of alcohol and substance abuse, when the drug of public affirmation ran out.
In this podcast Bruce, at the 2016 One Life Conference, speaks to him about the turning point in his life and career when he received Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour - the source of his true identity and fulfillment.
Bruce also shares Chaplaincy golden nuggets like the 4 “Ds” typically experienced by many elite athletes and the 3 areas where many athletes get their identities incorrectly from. He shares the Sports Chaplaincy South Africa dream of having chaplains caring for and mentoring sports communities in South Africa, experiencing these challenges.
Watch out for Part 2 with Jonathan and Bruce where they have a rich and insightful conversation exploring the question, "Where's the money gone? Why do so many sports people experience money problems, and what can be done about it?"

In this interview, pro rugby player Athi Mayinje relays his story of how as a young up and coming rugby player with the talent and ambitions for higher honours, he threw everything at building a successful career in the game.
He describes the toll that a myriad of injuries had on his progress on the path that he chose for himself. A path that eventually lead to the realisation of using his talents and status not to enrich himself, but as a means to touch the lives of the less fortunate in the challenged communities where he came from.
It's a story that really encourages us to determine God’s higher purpose for the talents and gifts bestowed on us…over and above mere personal ambitions.
